Burnaby is one of Metro Vancouver’s most varied municipalities, running from the wooded heights of Burnaby Mountain and Capitol Hill down to the flatter lots of South Burnaby and the density around Metrotown. Lots here tend to be larger than those in the City of Vancouver, and they span everything from post-war bungalows to large new builds. That mix, combined with hilly terrain and clay-heavy pockets near Deer Lake, means each property calls for its own approach.

Terrain is the first thing we assess. Sloped lots on Capitol Hill and the flanks of Burnaby Mountain often need retaining walls and terracing to create level, usable space and to manage the heavy runoff that flows downhill from November through March. On these well-drained bases we build interlocking stone and permeable patios that hold up to occasional freeze-thaw cycles, along with fire pits, pergolas, and full outdoor living areas that take advantage of the extra room these lots offer.

Planting strategy follows the microclimates. Mature tree canopy in older neighbourhoods creates deep shade, while clay soils near Deer Lake compact easily and need amendment and aeration to support healthy lawns. We choose shade-tolerant, rain-friendly plantings, install and restore sod, and design low-maintenance perennial beds suited to Burnaby’s wet winters. The result is a family-friendly landscape that stays functional and good-looking through every season.
