A waterfall that looks like it belongs in the landscape is engineered long before the first rock is set. The build starts underground with a hidden reservoir sized to hold the full volume of water in the falls plus a buffer, so the pump never runs dry when flow is at rest. A single continuous EPDM rubber liner carries the water from the top weir down to that basin with no seams to leak, and the pump is matched to the height and width of the drop so the flow reads as natural rather than either a trickle or a fire hose. Getting the weir rocks and splash pockets right is the real craft: the shape of each stone decides whether you hear a soft babble or a fuller rush.

For Vancouver gardens, the pondless approach earns its popularity. Our wet winters and constant leaf litter mean any standing pond needs vigilance against algae and debris, while a gravel-filled reservoir hides the water and keeps maintenance low. The moving, oxygenated flow also resists the moss and slime that coat still water here.

Keeping it running well

Skim leaves and needles off the intake through fall, clean the pump screen a few times a season, and top up for evaporation in summer. If you drain for a hard freeze, clear the pump and lines so nothing cracks.
