Spring Cleanups

A spring cleanup does more than make the yard look sharp. After a long Vancouver winter, beds are matted with fallen leaves, broken branches, and the slow decay that our constant rain accelerates. Left in place, that soggy debris traps moisture against crowns and stems and becomes a breeding ground for the fungal disease, slugs, and overwintering pests that get a head start every March. Clearing it out, cutting back spent perennials, and opening up airflow is the reset that lets new growth come in clean and strong.

Timing is the part homeowners most often get wrong. Two jobs pair naturally with spring but belong in different windows. Power raking (dethatching) is best done early, before the lawn is actively growing, so raking a lawn already in full flush just stresses it. Core aeration, by contrast, works best a little later once the ground has warmed, which in our region lands around April into May. We sequence these so each one helps rather than sets the turf back.

Why timing the booking matters

The season is short and it moves fast once it starts. Recutting crisp edges on the beds, a light cultivation to aerate the soil, and that first proper mow set the tone for everything that follows, so booking early secures the window when the work does the most good.
