A healthy Vancouver lawn is built on rhythm, not rescue. The single biggest factor is cutting height: we mow at 2.5 to 3 inches and never remove more than a third of the blade in one pass, which shades out weeds and drives deeper roots. Scalping a lawn short is the most common mistake we see, and in our wet, mild climate it just opens the door to moss and crabgrass. Sharp blades matter too. A clean cut heals fast, while a torn tip browns off and invites the fungal problems that thrive in coastal humidity.

The Pacific Northwest also asks two things most regions do not. First, soil here runs acidic under heavy rainfall, so an annual lime application in spring pulls the pH back into range and lets the grass actually use the fertilizer you apply. Second, thatch and compaction build quickly on our clay soils, which is why fall aeration and overseeding do more for turf density than any product in a bag. Aerating relieves compaction, gets air and water to the roots, and gives new seed a place to settle before winter.

When a program pays off

If you see moss creeping in, thinning patches under trees, or standing water after a storm, those are drainage and light signals, not just mowing problems. We read the whole lawn: sun exposure, soil, and grade, then match the cut, feed, and aeration schedule to what the turf is telling us.
