Clean sweep. Remove the suffocating layer of thatch and moss to reveal a healthier lawn.

Thatch is the tan, spongy layer of dead stems and roots that builds up between the green blades and the soil. A thin layer is healthy, but once it passes about half an inch it starts blocking water, air, and fertilizer from reaching the root zone. On the West Coast the bigger problem is usually moss. Our wet, mild winters and shaded, north-facing lawns give moss almost ideal conditions, and by late winter it can crowd out the grass entirely. Power raking uses a machine with spinning vertical tines that comb through the turf, lifting out that dead matter and pulling the moss loose so it can be raked up and hauled away.

Doing it well is mostly about timing and restraint. Early spring, once the grass is actively growing, gives the lawn a full season to knit back together. The lawn should be mowed a little shorter and reasonably dry beforehand, since raking soggy turf tears at living crowns instead of just lifting debris. It is easy to be too aggressive: a single pass at the right depth removes the thatch without shredding healthy grass.

How to tell you need it

If you can see green moss between the blades, or the lawn feels springy and cushioned when you walk on it, thatch and moss have built up past what hand raking will fix. Because dethatching leaves bare patches, it pairs naturally with overseeding: the exposed soil is a ready seedbed, and top-dressing the moss-prone areas afterward helps the new grass establish.
