The whole performance of a synthetic lawn is decided under the turf, not in it. On the West Coast, where the ground is soaked for much of the year, the base is everything. A proper install starts by excavating four to six inches, removing the organic soil that would otherwise hold moisture and settle unevenly, then building back a compacted crushed-rock sub-base that both stabilizes the surface and lets rainwater drain straight through. Skip or shortcut that layer and the lawn puddles, grows moss along the seams, and can turn soft and mouldy within a couple of wet winters. Done right, the base drains faster than any rainfall our climate produces, so the surface is usable even in a downpour.

Beyond drainage, the details that separate a premium install are seaming, edge anchoring, and infill. Seams should be glued and joined so they disappear rather than lift, edges pinned so the turf cannot creep or curl, and the fibre laid consistently in one direction so the lawn reads as a single sheet. Infill keeps the blades upright and adds ballast; pet-grade systems add a deodorizing layer to manage odour.

Where it makes the most sense

Synthetic turf earns its keep on the lots that fight real grass: heavy shade under mature trees, slopes that erode, dog runs that wear to mud, and small courtyards where a mower is impractical. It is not the right answer everywhere, but for those conditions common across Vancouver yards, it removes the mowing, watering, and reseeding that never quite win.
