Carports
Custom carport construction in Vancouver — cedar, aluminum, and steel-framed structures engineered for Pacific Northwest rain and snow loads. Permitted, code-compliant, and built in 2-4 weeks. 5-year workmanship warranty.
Carports Built for Vancouver Weather
If you’ve spent a winter scraping ice off your windshield at 6 AM, you already know why a carport pays for itself. We design and build custom carports in cedar, aluminum, and powder-coated steel — engineered for Pacific Northwest rain, snow loads, and wind, fully permitted, and built to look like part of your house instead of a hardware-store afterthought.
Why a carport instead of a garage?
- Cost. A carport is typically 30–50% cheaper than a fully-enclosed garage of the same footprint. You’re paying for posts, beams, and a roof — not walls, doors, foundation slabs, drywall, and electrical rough-in.
- Speed. A garage is a 4–8 month project once permits clear. A carport is 5–10 days on site.
- Setback flexibility. Some Metro Vancouver zoning bylaws allow carports closer to property lines than fully-enclosed structures, which can be the difference between fitting two cars and one.
- Doubles as outdoor living. A 24x20 cedar carport with the cars out is a covered patio. We’ve built carports clients now use as summer dining areas, dry workshop space, and rainy-day kid zones.
What we build
We are not a kit-installer. Every carport we build is custom-designed for your driveway, drainage, and home architecture:
- Cedar post-and-beam carports — Western Red Cedar 6x6 posts and 4x10 or larger beams, traditional joinery, stained or left to weather to silver.
- Powder-coated steel-framed carports — engineered steel I-beams or HSS posts, modern look, 50+ year life.
- Aluminum carports — lighter-duty but lowest-cost and zero-maintenance.
- RV and boat carports — 12 to 14-foot clear height, longer spans, reinforced for boat/RV weight transfer.
- Attached carports — ledger-mounted to your house with proper flashing and structural connection.
- Freestanding carports — fully independent, useful when attaching isn’t an option due to roofline or setback.
Built right, the first time
A carport that fails in 5 years was almost always built without footings, without engineering, or without proper post-base hardware. We don’t take shortcuts:
- Concrete footings to frost-line depth — never surface-mounted post bases
- Galvanized post-base hardware — no direct soil contact, ever
- Engineered beams sized for snow load — Vancouver minimum 40 psf, higher on North Shore
- Stainless or hot-dipped galvanized fasteners — coatings fail in 10 years; stainless lasts forever
- Proper roof drainage — gutters and downspouts that tie into existing drainage or a French drain
- Permitted and inspected — every carport is engineered, drawn, submitted, and inspected by your municipality
From quote to parking under it
Our typical build is 5–10 working days on site once permits are approved. Permit approval from your municipality takes 3–6 weeks; we handle the full submission. Most clients are parking under their new carport within 2 months of signing.

Our Process
Free Site Visit & Design
We measure your driveway, check setbacks against your property line, assess drainage, and discuss layout (single, double, or tandem). You receive a 3D rendering showing how the carport will sit relative to your house and street.
Permit Submission
Carports require a building permit in every Metro Vancouver municipality. We prepare engineered drawings showing footing depths, post sizing, and roof load calculations, then submit to the City of Vancouver, Burnaby, Surrey, Richmond, North Van, West Van, Coquitlam, or Langley. Approval takes 3–6 weeks.
Footings & Posts
We dig and pour concrete footings to local frost-line depth (typically 18–24 inches in the Lower Mainland), set 6x6 cedar or galvanized steel posts in galvanized post bases, and brace plumb. No surface-mount shortcuts — surface-mounted posts fail under wind load.
Beams, Rafters & Roof
Engineered beams span between posts. Rafters are sized for snow load (Vancouver minimum 40 psf, North Shore higher). Roofing is your choice of corrugated polycarbonate (lets light through), standing-seam metal (premium look, 50-year life), or asphalt shingle to match your house.
Drainage & Finishing
We install gutters and downspouts that tie into your existing drainage or a French drain. Posts get cedar shrouds or paint. Optional add-ons: LED soffit lighting, EV charger conduit rough-in, motion-sensor security lights.
Final Inspection & Walkthrough
City final inspection, debris cleanup, and walkthrough where we hand you the structural warranty card, our 5-year workmanship warranty, and care notes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a permit for a carport in Vancouver?
Yes — carports require a building permit in the City of Vancouver, Burnaby, Surrey, Richmond, North Vancouver, West Vancouver, Coquitlam, Port Moody, New Westminster, Langley, and White Rock. Even freestanding carports trigger permit requirements because of the structural-load and setback implications. We handle the full engineering drawings, footing specs, snow-load calcs, and city submission. Permit approval typically takes 3–6 weeks.
How much does a carport cost in Metro Vancouver?
Installed pricing in 2026 typically runs $8,000–$18,000 for a single-car cedar carport and $14,000–$28,000 for a double-car structure, including engineered footings, structural framing, roofing, and gutters. Aluminum kits run cheaper ($6,000–$12,000) but look light-duty. Premium steel-framed carports with metal roofing and integrated lighting can reach $35,000+ for a double. RV and boat carports with 12-foot clearance start around $20,000. We give you a fixed quote after a free site visit — no surprises.
Cedar vs aluminum vs steel — which is best?
**Cedar** looks the warmest and matches West Coast architecture, but needs staining every 3-4 years to keep its color. Best for properties where the carport is visible from the street. **Aluminum** is the cheapest and zero-maintenance, but looks utilitarian and is light-duty. Best for backyard vehicle storage where looks don't matter. **Powder-coated steel** is the strongest, holds the most snow load, and looks modern — best for North Shore homes with heavier snow and for owners who want decades of zero maintenance. We install all three and walk you through samples.
Will it handle Vancouver snow and rain?
Yes — we engineer every carport to your municipality's minimum snow load (40 psf in most of Metro Vancouver, higher on the North Shore and at elevation). Rafters are sized accordingly, and roof slope is set for proper drainage. Polycarbonate roofs are rated for hail and tree-branch impact. Gutters and downspouts route runoff away from the structure and your house. We've never had a snow-load failure on a carport we built.
Can I add walls later to convert it into a garage?
Yes, if we plan for it during the carport build — we upsize the posts and footings to garage-grade and pre-frame for future wall integration. Retrofitting wall infill onto an undersized carport later usually means tearing it out and rebuilding. Tell us during the design phase if a future garage conversion is on your radar; the upsize during the carport build is typically only $1,500–$3,000 more.
Can I install an EV charger or solar panels on a carport?
Yes — both are common upgrades. For EV chargers, we run conduit from your electrical panel through the carport posts during framing so the wiring stays hidden, then leave it ready for a licensed electrician to terminate. For solar, we engineer the roof for the additional dead load (typically 4–6 psf for residential panels) and rough-in conduit for the inverter run. Mention either at the design stage and we factor it into the structural and electrical drawings.
How long does a carport take to build?
Permit approval is the long part — 3–6 weeks depending on the municipality. Once permits are in hand, on-site construction is 5–10 working days for a standard single or double carport, or 2–3 weeks for larger RV/boat structures or carports with integrated lighting and EV rough-in. Most clients are parking under their new carport within 2 months of signing.
