Will uplighting be too bright or glaring from inside the house?
No. We use warm white LEDs in the 2700K-3000K range and match beam angles to each subject, tight 15-degree spots for tall conifers, wider 38-60 degree floods for broad canopies or stone facades. Fixtures are aimed upward and shielded so you see the lit object, not the source. The effect is mood and depth, not glare through your windows.
What does tree uplighting cost in Vancouver?
A typical uplighting package for a front yard with 3-5 feature trees runs $2,000-$4,500 installed. Individual well lights or directional uplights average $175-$325 each including wiring and splices, the transformer is $400-$1,200, and larger estate jobs with mature cedars, firs, or Japanese maples can run $8,000-$15,000.
Which Vancouver trees and features work best for uplighting?
Douglas fir, cedar, and dogwood give dramatic canopy wash. Japanese maples glow beautifully from below because of their open branch structure. Stone veneer, cedar shingle, and board-and-batten facades all graze well with narrow-beam fixtures set close to the wall. Smooth stucco tends to look flat, we'll suggest wall wash or silhouette techniques instead.
How deep do the fixtures sit, will they survive lawn mowing and frost heave?
For in-ground well lights we excavate a gravel drainage base so frost and our wet winters don't push the fixture out of alignment. Above-grade directional fixtures are stake-mounted in mulched beds, not turf, so they're out of the mower's path. Everything is brass or copper, so it patinas rather than rusting.
Can you uplight trees on the property line or boulevard?
Boulevard and street trees are City of Vancouver property, so we don't attach or stake anything into them, but we can aim fixtures from your side of the line to light them legally. For shared property-line trees we confirm with the neighbour first. This is a common ask in neighbourhoods like Kitsilano and Point Grey where mature canopies sit right at the edge.
