Composite Decks

Premium Trex, TimberTech & Fiberon composite deck installation in Vancouver. Rot-proof, fade-resistant, engineered for Pacific Northwest rain. 25-year warranty.

Composite Decks Built for Vancouver Weather

Cedar smells amazing the day you build it. Twelve years later, after a dozen Vancouver winters, you’re sanding, staining, and replacing rotted boards. Composite skips that.

We install premium capped composite decking (Trex, TimberTech AZEK, Fiberon, and Deckorators) engineered specifically to survive the Pacific Northwest’s relentless rain, freeze-thaw cycles, and UV exposure without cracking, fading, splintering, or rotting.

Why composite is the right call for the Lower Mainland

  • Our rainy season runs from October to April. Composite shrugs off 60+ inches of annual rainfall with zero degradation. Cedar absorbs water, swells, contracts, and eventually rots from the inside out.
  • Freeze-thaw cycles destroy traditional decks. Vancouver gets 30–40 freeze-thaw cycles per winter, and every one of them creates micro-cracks in stained cedar and softwood. Capped composite doesn’t care.
  • Mold & moss are aggressive here. Walk any neighbourhood in February: every cedar deck has moss patches. Composite’s polymer cap is non-porous; nothing roots into it.
  • Sun exposure is real, especially July–September. Premium capped composite carries 25-year fade warranties. Cedar fades to grey within 6 months without UV-blocking stain.

What we install

We are not a one-brand shop. We carry Trex Transcend / Enhance / Select, TimberTech AZEK & PRO, Fiberon Concordia / Sanctuary, and Deckorators Voyage. Different boards have different colour palettes, board widths (5.5” vs 7.25”), thermal performance, and price points, and we walk you through actual physical samples in your hand on the site visit so you can compare under your specific lighting.

Built right, the first time

A composite deck is only as good as the framing underneath. We build every deck with:

  • Pressure-treated 2x10 or 2x12 joists (never 2x8, which is underbuilt for composite’s higher dead load)
  • Joist tape on every joist top to prevent water from sitting between board and joist
  • Stainless steel fasteners (galvanized rusts; coatings fail in 5–10 years)
  • Hidden fastener clip systems (Cortex, Trex Hideaway, TimberTech CONCEALoc): no exposed screws
  • Picture-frame borders to cap exposed end-grain for a finished look
  • Engineered concrete footings to local frost-line depth, not surface blocks

From quote to lounging on it

Our typical build is 5–10 working days on site once permits are approved. Permit approval from the City of Vancouver, Burnaby, Surrey, or your municipality typically takes 3–6 weeks; we handle the full submission. Most clients are entertaining on their new deck within 2–3 months of signing.

Free site visit, free 3D rendering, fixed quote, 5-year workmanship warranty, manufacturer board warranties up to 50 years. Call (604) 353-4399 or use our free quote form to get started.

Our Process

1

Free Site Visit & Design

We measure your space, assess sun exposure and drainage, talk through layout (single vs. multi-level, railings, stairs, hot tub cutout), and walk you through board samples in 4–6 colors. You receive a 3D rendering before construction begins.

2

Permit Submission

All decks above 24 inches in Metro Vancouver require a building permit. We prepare engineered framing drawings, structural calcs, and submit to your municipality (Vancouver, Burnaby, Surrey, Richmond, North Van, West Van, Coquitlam, Langley). Permit approval usually takes 3–6 weeks.

3

Foundation & Framing

We dig, pour concrete footings to local frost-line code, install pressure-treated 2x10 or 2x12 framing with proper ledger flashing against your house, and use joist tape to prevent moisture damage to the framing under composite boards.

4

Composite Decking Install

Boards are installed with hidden fastener clips (Cortex or manufacturer-spec) at proper expansion gaps for our temperature swings. Picture-frame perimeter borders cap exposed end-grain for a finished look. We use stainless fasteners only.

5

Railings, Stairs & Lighting

Aluminum or composite railings with glass, cable, or balusters. Stairs framed with composite-clad risers. Optional integrated LED lighting on posts, risers, and under-rail with low-voltage transformer.

6

Final Inspection & Walkthrough

City final inspection, tidy-up, and a walkthrough where we hand you the manufacturer warranty card, our 5-year workmanship warranty, and care instructions (which are basically: spray with hose once a year).

Frequently Asked Questions

Composite vs cedar: which is better for Vancouver?

Composite wins for Vancouver climate in 9 out of 10 cases. Our wet winters, freeze-thaw cycles, and humid summers brutalize cedar. Even pressure-treated cedar needs annual cleaning, every-2-year staining, and rots out in 12–18 years if maintained, 8–10 years if neglected. Capped composite (Trex, TimberTech, Fiberon) is engineered with a polymer shell that's impervious to rain, mold, fade, and rot. Most boards carry 25–50 year warranties. Cedar still wins on raw cost ($55–$85/sq ft installed vs $90–$140 for composite) and on the look-and-smell of real wood. But factor in 20 years of stain-and-seal labor and cedar's 'cheaper' starts to flip.

How much does a composite deck cost in Metro Vancouver?

Installed pricing in 2026 typically runs $90–$140 per square foot for capped composite, including substructure, hidden fasteners, picture-frame borders, and standard railings. A 300 sq ft single-level backyard composite deck is usually $27,000–$42,000 turnkey. Multi-level builds, glass railings, integrated LED lighting, and hot tub framing each add $3,000–$15,000. Premium tropical-look brands like TimberTech AZEK Vintage Collection or Trex Transcend Lineage push closer to $140/sq ft. We give you a fixed quote after a free site visit. No surprises.

Which composite brand should I pick: Trex, TimberTech, or Fiberon?

All three are excellent. **Trex** has the longest track record (since 1996), the largest color range, and uses 95% recycled material, which gives it the best ESG story. **TimberTech AZEK** is the only fully-PVC option in this list, which means it's lighter, cooler underfoot in summer, and has the most realistic wood-grain visuals. **Fiberon** offers the best price-to-performance, especially the Concordia line, and has excellent fade warranty terms. We carry all three and walk you through samples in your hand. The 'right' brand depends on your color preference and whether you prioritize cool-touch (TimberTech wins) or recycled content (Trex wins).

Do I really need a permit for a composite deck in Vancouver?

Yes. Any deck higher than 24 inches (60cm) above grade requires a building permit in the City of Vancouver, Burnaby, Surrey, Richmond, North Vancouver, West Vancouver, Coquitlam, Port Moody, New Westminster, and Langley. Decks attached to the house typically need a permit regardless of height because of ledger-flashing and structural-load implications. We handle the full engineering drawings, structural calcs, and city submission. Permit approval typically takes 3–6 weeks, which we factor into our build schedule.

Will composite get hot in summer? My kids run barefoot.

Heat is the one real downside vs cedar. Composite can run 10–25°F warmer than cedar on a sunny day because the polymer cap absorbs more solar radiation. The key variables: lighter colors stay cooler (greys and tans run cooler than dark browns and blacks); TimberTech AZEK PVC runs cooler than wood-fiber composites because it has lower thermal mass; and shade structures (pergolas, umbrellas) make a huge difference. For Vancouver, where we get 50 truly hot days a year, this is a much smaller issue than in California or Arizona. We always show clients samples in direct sun before they commit to a color.

How long does a composite deck last?

The boards themselves carry 25–50 year manufacturer warranties against fade, stain, and structural failure. Realistic full-deck lifespan in Vancouver (including the framing, fasteners, and railings) is 30–40 years if installed correctly with proper drainage and pressure-treated structural members. Compared to cedar's 12–18 year realistic lifespan in our climate, composite is a generation-long investment. Our 5-year workmanship warranty covers any installation defect. The manufacturer warranty covers the boards themselves.

Can I put a hot tub on a composite deck?

Yes, but it requires upsized framing. A standard 6-person hot tub plus water plus people weighs around 5,000 lbs concentrated in 50 sq ft, which is ~100 lbs per sq ft and more than 2x normal deck design load. We engineer hot-tub-bearing decks with 2x12 joists, doubled posts, and concrete footings designed for the localized load. Always tell us during the design phase if a hot tub is in the plan; retrofitting one onto an existing deck is expensive and sometimes impossible.
