A fence is only as good as its posts, and posts are where most fences fail. We set posts deep in concrete, past the frost line, so winter heave and coastal wind gusts cannot lever them loose over the years. The detail that separates a fence that lasts from one that sags is what happens at the bottom of the post: concrete that traps water around the wood invites rot, so we slope the top of the footing to shed water and keep the post base draining. Cedar is the local favourite for good reason. It grows across the Pacific Northwest, it resists rot and insects naturally, and it takes stain beautifully, though even cedar wants a coat of stain or oil every few years to hold its colour against our rain rather than weathering to grey.

Style is where a fence earns its keep. Horizontal slat fences read modern and clean, but the long unsupported runs want thicker boards and true, plumb posts or they bow, so the framing has to be right underneath. Board-on-board and lapped panels give full privacy and hide the gaps that open up as any wood fence dries and moves through the seasons. For screening without a solid wall, a slatted privacy panel or a planted trellis filters sightlines while still letting air move through, which matters on a windy lot where a solid fence acts like a sail.

Before we dig, we confirm the property line and the height rules, because a fence built in the wrong spot or a few inches too tall is an expensive thing to move. Setting posts on the true boundary and knowing which yard allows which height keeps the project neighbourly and compliant from the first hole.
