Frequently Asked Questions

How do I stop a slope from washing out?

The durable fix is a three-part system: redirect surface water above the slope, stabilize the face with terracing or matting, and plant deep-rooting groundcovers to lock the soil long-term. A single measure on its own usually fails within a couple of Vancouver winters — the rain here is relentless enough that we design for all three.

What does erosion control cost in Vancouver?

Small vegetative solutions with coir matting and planting start around $12 to $20 per square foot. Terraced slopes with timber or block walls run $45 to $90 per square foot of slope face, and rock armoring (riprap) is usually $35 to $70 per square foot depending on stone size and access.

Why is erosion such a problem on Vancouver properties?

Vancouver gets over 1200mm of rain a year, and most of our soils are glacial clay over till — water sheets across the surface instead of infiltrating, so any slope without dense roots or armoring loses material fast. North Shore and Burnaby mountain properties are especially prone to it.

Which plants actually hold a slope here?

We lean on kinnikinnick, salal, sword fern, creeping Oregon grape, and native sedges for shaded slopes, and bearberry or low juniper for sunny exposures. These have root structures deep and fibrous enough to stabilize soil, and they tolerate our wet winters and dry summers without irrigation after establishment.

Do I need permits or engineering for a retaining solution?

In Vancouver, any retaining wall over 1.2 metres (about 4 feet) requires a permit and usually an engineered design. Slopes near watercourses or protected trees also trigger additional review. We handle the drawings, permitting, and arborist coordination as part of the scope when needed.
