What's the right height and depth for a seating wall?
We build seat walls 18 to 22 inches high and 14 to 18 inches deep at the cap — that matches standard chair height and gives enough room to sit without perching. If cushions will live on it year-round, we bump the depth closer to 18 inches for comfort.
What does a seating wall cost in Vancouver?
Expect $250 to $450 per linear foot installed, depending on height, veneer, and cap material. Poured concrete with a natural stone veneer and bluestone cap sits at the upper end; a simpler allan-block style wall with a precast cap runs closer to the lower end.
Will a seating wall hold up to Vancouver winters?
Yes, when it's built on a proper frost-depth footing and the cap is sealed. Our winters cycle above and below freezing constantly, so we use a compacted gravel base below the footing and flashing or a capillary break behind any veneer to keep moisture from wicking into the stone.
Can a seating wall double as a retaining wall?
Under about 3 feet of retained soil, yes — we engineer the structure as a retaining wall first and add the seating profile on top. Above that, BC building code generally requires an engineered design, and the seating function becomes secondary to structural drainage and reinforcement.
How long does installation take?
A 15 to 20 foot seating wall is usually 4 to 7 days on-site: footing excavation, forming and pour (or block setting), veneer, and cap. Weather delays are common between November and February, so we often schedule walls for the drier months when the concrete cures cleanly.
