Seasonal décor is the fastest way to make an entrance feel finished, and it works best when it follows the calendar rather than a single install. A typical year runs in three moves: fall harvest planters in late September with mums, ornamental kale, and gourds while the garden fades; a changeover to fresh winter greens in mid-November; and spring bulb pots as the wet grey months lift. Each changeover keeps the front of the home looking intentional instead of tired, which is the whole point of the exercise.

Vancouver’s climate is quietly ideal for the winter look. Cool, damp, rarely-frozen air keeps fresh-cut cedar, fir, and pine looking alive for months, far longer than they would hold in a dry prairie winter. The trick is building the arrangement to last: a sturdy frost-resistant container, greens packed with a mix of textures, and structural accents like birch, red dogwood, and magnolia that read well even under grey skies. Adding warm-white lighting is what carries the display through the long dark afternoons the coast is known for, turning a planter into something you actually notice at 4pm in December.

A few things separate a display that lasts from one that flops:

• Choose containers that shrug off the wet-freeze-thaw cycle; thin terracotta tends to crack by late winter here.
• Balance fresh greens with dried or woody elements so the arrangement holds shape as the season wears on.
• Keep colours tied to the front door and any indoor holiday décor so the entry reads as one deliberate look.
