On the coast, the weather that causes real damage is rarely snow. It is wind and water. Vancouver and the North Shore take at least one or two serious windstorms most winters, the kind that snap saturated limbs, uproot shallow-rooted trees, and drop branches across driveways and roofs. Heavy, sustained rain does the quieter damage: overwhelmed drains, water pooling against foundations, and blocked catch basins that turn a low spot in the yard into standing water within hours. When a tree comes down on a structure or water starts entering a building, the priority is safety and stopping further damage, not tidiness. That comes later.

Good emergency work happens in a clear order. First the site is made safe: hazardous limbs are secured or removed, blocked access is opened, and anything threatening people or the building is dealt with. Then the immediate cause is addressed, whether that is clearing a fallen tree, redirecting water away from the foundation, or opening a blocked drain so the yard can shed the rain it is holding. Only after the situation is stable does the conversation turn to permanent repair and cleanup, which is usually calmer and cheaper once the pressure is off.

Storm damage versus routine cleanup

Knowing the difference saves money. A tree on the house, a limb hung up over a walkway, or water actively entering a building is a genuine emergency and worth an after-hours call. Scattered branches, a stable lean, or debris across the lawn can generally wait for a scheduled visit at standard rates. For any tree removed from a roof, vehicle, or fence, we document the work with photos and itemized invoices, which is exactly what an insurance adjuster will ask to see.
