Annuals are the part of a garden you get to rewrite every few months, and the trick to a display that reads as designed rather than random is planting to a scheme. We choose a tight palette per rotation, layer heights so upright growers sit behind trailers, and plant at high density so beds and containers look full on day one instead of waiting weeks to knit together. Matching the plant to its exposure is what keeps a display healthy: sun-lovers like petunias, calibrachoa, and geraniums want six or more hours of direct light, while shaded entries do far better with begonias, impatiens, and coleus that would scorch in full sun.

In our Zone 8b climate the calendar drives the plan. Cool, wet springs suit pansies, violas, and ranunculus that shrug off a late frost; the real summer color goes in once nights warm in late May or June, since heat-lovers sulk if planted too early into cold Vancouver soil. Fall shifts to mums and ornamental kale that hold through the first frosts, and winter containers lean on evergreen boughs, red twig dogwood, and hardy accents that carry structure through the grey months. The one thing annuals will not forgive is drought: containers and hanging baskets in full sun can need daily water in July, so we plan watering visits or drip irrigation into every program from the start.
