Good mulching is more about preparation than the mulch itself. We weed thoroughly, cut clean edges along lawns and pathways, and pull the old, matted top layer back before anything new goes down. Mulch dropped over weeds or onto compacted soil just traps them and sheds water, so the prep is where the value is. We then lay a consistent 2 to 3 inch layer, keeping it pulled back a few inches from trunks, stems, and siding so bark can breathe and moisture does not sit against wood or foundation.

For Vancouver gardens the material choice matters. Fine-grade hemlock and fir bark are locally milled, sit tight without floating away in heavy rain, and break down at a pace that feeds our clay-heavy soils rather than crusting over them. In deep shade and constantly damp beds we keep the layer on the thinner side of the range, since a heavy blanket in those spots holds too much water, feeds moss, and gives slugs somewhere to shelter. On slopes and exposed beds a slightly coarser bark knits together and resists washout during our long wet winters.

Common mistakes we avoid

• Mulch volcanoes piled against trunks, which invite rot and girdling roots.
• Burying the crowns of perennials and shallow-rooted shrubs, which smothers them.
• Going too deep, which starves soil of oxygen and can turn a bed sour and anaerobic.
