Romance and structure. Enjoy the timeless appeal of a traditional English cottage garden.

The look people picture as loose and romantic is actually built on firm bones. We start with structure: clipped boxwood, low hedges, defined paths, and evergreen anchors that hold the composition through winter when the perennials have died back. Against that framework we layer the softer planting, tallest at the back or centre and cascading forward, so a bed reads as full and abundant rather than gappy. A classic Vancouver palette leans on foxgloves, delphiniums, hollyhocks, peonies, catmint, lavender, and hardy geraniums, threaded with repeat-flowering roses for fragrance and colour that carries from June into fall.

Our climate is one of the reasons this style works so well here. Mild, wet winters and cool summers mirror much of southern England, so plants that struggle in hotter parts of North America thrive around Vancouver. The main things to design around are our clay soils and constant winter moisture: we improve drainage and work in plenty of organic matter before planting, since roses and many perennials resent sitting in cold, waterlogged ground. Good airflow and generous spacing also matter here, because our damp conditions encourage black spot and powdery mildew. Choosing disease-resistant shrub roses and giving plants room to breathe keeps the garden looking its best without a heavy spray routine. The style does ask for seasonal attention, deadheading, dividing, and tidying, but that ongoing hand is exactly what keeps it lush year after year.
