Frequently Asked Questions
My Vancouver soil is heavy clay — can you fix it?
Yes — Vancouver's native glacial clay is one of the most common soil problems we solve. We use organic compost, coarse sand, gypsum, and biochar to break up clay structure. Severe cases may require full replacement of the top 8-12 inches with engineered turf or garden soil.
Why is my soil so acidic in Vancouver?
The Pacific Northwest's high rainfall naturally leaches calcium out of soils, leaving them acidic (pH 5.0-5.8 is typical). Most lawn grasses and many vegetables prefer pH 6.2-6.8. Annual dolomite lime application is the standard correction, which we include in most soil-prep programs.
Do you test soil before recommending amendments?
Yes for any significant garden investment — we do pH and major nutrient testing (N-P-K, micronutrients, organic matter %). Testing costs $75-$150 and prevents wasting money on amendments your soil doesn't need. Small planting jobs usually don't require testing.
How much does soil preparation cost?
Basic tilling and organic matter amendment runs $2-$5 per sq ft. Full topsoil replacement with delivered garden blend is $6-$14 per sq ft. Drainage remediation (grading, perforated drain lines, gravel layers) adds $5-$15 per sq ft depending on complexity.
How deep should soil be prepared for lawn vs garden beds?
Lawns need 4-6 inches of prepared root zone over compacted fill. Perennial garden beds need 8-12 inches. Vegetable beds and shrub plantings do best with 12-18 inches of amended soil. Trees need even deeper prep — at least a hole 2x the root ball width with compost-amended backfill.
